Toric Lens Implant

Acrysof Toric IOL
The Acrysof Toric lens implant differs from other premium lens implants, such as the Tecnis Multifocal and the Crystalens, in that it is specifically designed for the patient who has astigmatism. In many cases, when patients who have astigmatism undergo cataract surgery, they still require glasses to see both at distance and near after surgery, due to their astigmatism. If freedom from glasses is important to you, and you are planning to have surgery to remove a cataract, you may now choose to have an intraocular lens that makes it possible to treat the cataract and correct the astigmatism at the same time.

Corneal astigmatism is present in most eyes, although in many cases is so minor, that vision is not affected. It simply means that the cornea, or front window of the eye, is not perfectly round like a baseball, but is instead shaped like a football, with one area steeper than the other. This causes the eye to have more than one focal point, resulting in blurred vision. Many people who have astigmatism are well aware of it, because they have been wearing glasses or contact lenses to correct it most of their lives. There are many ways to correct astigmatism including Laser Vision Correction, and during cataract surgery with the Acrysof Toric lens implant.

The Acrysof Toric intraocular lens is a lens that Dr. Violin implants during cataract surgery, to replace your clouded lens. This lens is designed to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism, and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision after surgery. But unlike the Tecnis Multifocal and Crystalens intraocular lenses, the Acrysof Toric lens does not have the ability to provide near vision, and therefore may not eliminate the need for reading glasses after cataract surgery.

If you have been told that you have a cataract, and have astigmatism, you may be a candidate for the Acrysof Toric lens implant. Dr. Violin and his staff will be happy to evaluate you, discuss this option with you, and help you achieve high quality distance vision without glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.
