Cataract Surgery Pre and Post Surgical Instructions


PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE SURGERY

Three different eye drops will be sent to your pharmacy prior to your surgery:

Drop #1 – STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (shake bottle well) such as Pred Forte, Prednisolone
Drop #2 – ANTIBIOTIC such as Azasite, Vigamox, Zymar, Ciloxin, Ocuflox, Ciprofloxacin, Tobramycin
Drop #3 – NON STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY such as Acular, Ketorolac, Nevanac, Voltaren or Diclofenac

* Please note that under Massachusetts law, pharmacies can substitute similar drops without the surgeon’s consent.

Use 1 drop of each (4) times a day (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bedtime) for two days before surgery in the eye that is going to be operated on. Leave 5 minutes between each drop when putting them in. You do not need to use the drops on the day of surgery.

DAY OF SURGERY INSTRUCTIONS:

You will be contacted by phone the week before your procedure with your scheduled arrival time. Please report to The Cataract and Laser Center at 333 Elm Street, Dedham, MA on the day of surgery. Allow yourself ample time for travel so that you arrive on time. You will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from the facility.

If you are being transported by the van, you will be contacted by phone the week before your procedure with the scheduled pickup time.

You are permitted to have a light breakfast the morning of surgery, such as tea and toast. If your surgery is scheduled for the afternoon, you are permitted to have a light lunch.

Take all of your routine daily medications as prescribed.

PLEASE BRING YOUR ROUTINE MEDICATIONS WITH YOU THE DAY OF SURGERY

Diabetics on oral medication should take medication as usual. Diabetics taking insulin should take the full morning dose. You are permitted to have a light breakfast.

You may wear your everyday clothing for your surgery, however for your comfort and ease, we suggest wearing short-sleeved shirts or blouses which button down the front, and low heeled comfortable shoes. We encourage women to wear slacks.

DO NOT WEAR EYE MAKE-UP OF ANY KIND.

IMPORTANT HOME INSTRUCTIONS AFTER CATARACT SURGERY

You will be seen the day following surgery in the Norwood office.

1. Next morning, if the eyelashes are sticky, gently wipe around the eye with sterile gauze. Moisten gauze if necessary.

2. MEDICATION: CONTINUE THE DROPS UNTIL THE DOCTOR TELLS YOU TO STOP. Starting the morning after surgery: Shake the bottles and wait 5 minutes in between. Use:

DROP #1 – STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY such as Pred Forte, Prednisolone….. Starting the morning after surgery: 1 drop 2 times a day. This will be used for a few weeks.
DROP #2 – ANTIBIOTIC such as Azasite, Vigamox, Zymar, Ciloxin, Ocuflox, Ciprofloxacin, Tobramycin…..Starting the morning after surgery: 1 drop 2 times a day. This will be used for a few weeks.
DROP #3 – NON STEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY such as Acular, Ketorolac, Nevanac, Voltaren, or Diclofenac…..Starting the morning after surgery: 1 drop 2 times a day. This will be used for a few weeks.

GLAUCOMA PATIENTS: IN THE NON-OPERATED EYE:

If you are wearing a perforated metal patch, leave it on until morning. Wear glasses during the day to protect your eye (old glasses, sunglasses, etc.) DO NOT RUB THE EYE. Wear the shield at night when sleeping or when you take a nap (for 1 week). Please resume all medications taken prior to surgery, including aspirin, blood thinners (anticoagulants) and eye drops for glaucoma. We recommend Tylenol for discomfort.

BRING ALL YOUR EYE MEDICATIONS TO THE OFFICE WHEN YOU RETURN ON EVERY VISIT. PLEASE REPORT IMMEDIATLEY ANY PAIN OR LOSS OF VISION.
